LAMB FROM THE UPPER KAROO
Our Lamb – Sourced from Carnarvon in the Karoo, South Africa.
We are assured our lamb were born and bred, free-range grazing in the Carnarvon District of the Karoo, and that no additives or hormones are used by the farmer. It seems a certificate of Karoo meat of origin (KMOO) is not available at this time.
Karoo Lamb is now, since the end of October 2023, registered as a Geographical Indication (“GI”) in South Africa. “The registration will give Karoo Lamb the same protection as products such as Parma ham and Champagne that are produced in a specific geographical area”, according to Charles Erasmus, executive manager at the Karoo Lamb Consortium.
Certified Karoo Lamb farmers prefer their flocks to be free from added hormones, antibiotics & chemical additives, let them roam freely to only feed on Karoo indigenous flora. These shrubs have aromas which are palatable and nutritious to the Karoo sheep.
